Welcome to The Authentic Jazz Academy!
I am Ryan Francois, and I’m here to help you reach your optimum potential in the learning of all areas of Jazz Dance, both physical and historical.
I will be your guide and your mentor because . . .
I really want you to know what I know, completely.
The secrets of jazz dancing.
I want you to hear what I heard from my teachers and mentors when I was a student like you.
I want you to benefit from my years of experience and see the world of Jazz as I see it.
I want you to grow in your love for an artform I believe brings great joy and fulfilment for all the days of your life.
New courses coming in 2022!
Professional dancers will mix with experienced and less experienced Swing and Jazz dancers, to learn from each other’s strengths and challenges through participation and observation.
(In this context 'professional' means highly skilled professionally trained dancers, working/not working or at college level, usually with the skills of ballet, tap, contemporary, Hip Hop, Street, Musical Theatre or Modern Jazz.)
Develop your dance skills in an environment focused on serious results from serious training. You will learn some of the vocabulary of Vernacular Jazz and its core techniques. Through dance routines, repetition, skills and drills to master your body control, you’ll get a better grasp of how to express the movements performed by the original creative legends of Jazz Dance.
Learn to Jig Walk, Break a Leg and Shorty George and extend your understanding of forms that should never have been forgotten.
VERNACULAR BODY CONCEPTS
Learn the core structural movements of Jazz Dance from their early origins in animal dances and Juba-influenced Vernacular, through Minstrelsy, the Roaring Twenties, the Swinging Thirties and beyond. Learn the mechanics of movement and expressing it with soul, adding more than just the bare elements of the movement itself. This will be a journey through your body to bring out a deeper connection in your jazz execution.
The Swing Era's premier partner dance.
Acquire a good foundational structure that will open the door to a new world of connection and improvisation.
